What is RNG?

Of all the NES speed runs I've seen, this one seems to be the most technically well thought out and also the most complicated due to all the RNG manipulations and the RNG itself. You guys are gods for putting so much effort into dissecting MTPO. Wicked interesting in terms of game design analysis. Lol. The final odds to tie this TAS are magnitudes more than the number of objects in the observable universe, including dust particles and stray hydrogen ions. 14'46" is completely absurd all by itself.

The naming of these speedrunning tricks is almost as great as the trick itself

The Sandman fight is the most anime thing I've seen in this game. It's like Mac is just trying to survive the onslaught of Sandman's triple uppercuts until at the last minute he learns to replicate the attack and finishes the fight with the last of his strength. I swear I've seen the exact thing happen in Dragon Ball or something.

I have to ask why isn't the focus for this single fight or single circuit max score, it's shorter, you can skip the ones you don't want to do/are boring/other reason here?

Probably the future would be a mix of score and time. It would alleviate a lot of the complaints and specific fights, also opens the doors to routing using some fights as point farming locations and other fights as "time" farming. Simply dividing score by some incriminate of time or setting some baseline time marker and multiplying the score per unit time saved to keep higher values for ascetics

I suspect a big part of it is how much longer it is. The shorter a run is, the more times you can attempt it per unit of time. I suspect this is a big part of SMB's speedrunning popularity - it's such a short game, speedrun attempts are very fast. The longer categories are, the fewer people tend to participate. And when you are doing a game which is VERY heavily RNG-influenced, a long run is even worse. By making your fights 6-9 times longer, you're making it so that each run takes way, way, way longer. Also, I think speedrunning is just flashier as well than the max points strategies in Punch Out! There may be strategies involved in max score, but in a lot of speed runs, you either never get hit, or only get hit strategically in such a way to make things faster. Max score in Punch Out looks... way jankier.

I honestly don't care much for speedrunning. I like character action games because the culture is less about playing optimally and more just about seeing what insane shit you can get away with. Yeah, I COULD beat 4-1 from ULTRAKILL in less than 20 seconds, but I'd rather just play through the whole level.

interested to know if someone made a rom hack that manipulates the RNG so that it gives the optimal result

A console game that does actually have an active high score community (or active at some point, at least) is Super Monkey Ball. Admittedly Monkey Ball high score runs are much more similar to speedruns than Punch Out because the main sources of points are time and bananas you pick up along the way, so there is not nearly as much incentive to stick around in levels unless the time you lose is made up for in bananas.

i like the probably unintentional story telling of this category you're no longer the little guy, you're THE guy, and it's not about winning anymore, but about putting on a show so as many flashy finisher moves as possible, and intentionally dragging out the fight to increase tension

Does random number manipulation mean you do precise in game actions (probably after forcing original RNG state) or does it mean actually controlling the RNG on a case-by-case basis?

Gotta give it to you for the guts to throw down the gauntlet, but honestly it just sounds like a boring category. Sure, it's technical, but it just doesn't sound interesting stringing the game along to go for score. I'm not going to say you should stop, but you are in an up hill battle pushing for high score to be a big thing. It's such a degenerate play style when it comes to most games I think about that are popular to speedrun. I don't want to watch Mario slow down to connect every coin and abuse every enemy for points. I want to see him go fast and finish strong. I don't want to see little Mac abuse his opponents for points, I want to see him win. It's not boxing to drag things out unless it's the only way you can win. This is like watching an opponent win by clinching and scoring. Yes they win, but at what cost? There is a reason the audience tends to boo. We want a fight, not a slog. Good luck mate, but I'm not interested.
